Portland Soccer History

Soccer – the world’s game – formally took ground in the city of Portland in the early 1970s with the inception a professional franchise in the Portland Timbers and the foundation of a state-wide youth soccer association. Since then, the sport has swept over the region, creating local traditions and a passion for the game that has earned the city the moniker, “Soccer City USA.”

In various forms, the Portland Timbers have been the city’s professional club since 1975. After eight seasons in the North American Soccer League, the Timbers re-emerged in 2001 and compete in the United Soccer Leagues First Division. The Timbers have entertained fans against some of the era’s greatest players, including Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Brazilian World Cup star Romario and Kasey Keller – one of the most capped goalkeepers in U.S. Soccer history. The club’s supporters group, known as the Timbers Army, adds elements of an international atmosphere which create a match-day experience unlike many other venues in the country.

In 2003, the city’s passion for the game was put on display on an international stage. Portland’s PGE Park was selected as one of six venues to hold events as the United States played host to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nearly 70,000 people attended three days of events, which featured six matches, including the semifinal round of the tournament.

Over the years, the University of Portland has created a rich tradition in collegiate soccer through both its men’s and women’s programs. Combined, the school has made 10 NCAA finals appearances, with the women’s team capturing two NCAA championships. In addition to leading the nation in attendance over the past four seasons, UP has been a gateway for dozens of players to reach the professional ranks in the United States and abroad.

Throughout the state of Oregon, youth soccer participation has seen a dramatic increase over the past 15 years. The Oregon Youth Soccer Association has in excess of 50,000 participants ages 5-18, while thousands of adults play in competitive and recreational leagues. The sport has impacted local economies and attracted the involvement of families and communities in virtually every corner of the state.

Soccer is emerging in the United States as a dominant sport for youth and adults on many different levels, and Soccer City USA is leading the way as it looks towards Major League Soccer in 2011.
